3D worlds virtually going global

Two emerging Australian technology companies recently found themselves in a place that was very nearly out of this world.

The Virtual Worlds 2008 conference in New York City attracted more than 12,000 delegates and 40 exhibiting companies. While this pales in comparison with some technology trade shows, it is a big increase on the nine companies that exhibited last year and shows the phenomenal growth in interest in software for creating three-dimensional virtual environments.

Among the exhibitors was Canberra-based Simmersion Holdings, which previewed its Mycosm virtual world platform. Simmersion's chief executive, Bob Quodling, says Mycosm is designed so that anyone can quickly create or customise a virtual world for their own non-commercial purposes, regardless of their level of technical or graphic expertise.
